We are very pleased that you will be having your surgery at the Pembroke Regional Hospital.
Please call (613) 732-2811, extension 7138, between 12 noon and 3 p.m. the day before your surgery to confirm your surgery time.
If there is no answer, please call back. It is because the Unit Clerk is taking another call. If your surgery falls on a day after a holiday, please call the last business day before surgery.
Operating Room time is a valuable resource. Cancellations with less than five days notice cause problems with bookings and prevent others from using that time. Another patient who is waiting on surgery could be placed into your spot so that this time is used effectively.
Please call your surgeon if you are sick with a cold, flu, fever, concussion or any other illness. If you need to cancel it is imperative that you tell your surgeon immediately. This is for your safety.
Your surgeon may request that you see a nurse and/or anaesthesiologist prior to surgery.
Pembroke Regional Hospital will call or mail you a notification to provide your clinic appointment or a telephone screening call.
If you are unable to come, please notify your surgeon. The visit may take 60-75 minutes.
The nurse will explain how to prepare for surgery, what to expect during your hospital stay, and answer your questions. If a hospital pre-operative assessment clinic appointment is required, bring with you all prescribed medications, inhalers and insulin.
Lab tests can be done at any lab with the exception of Type and Screen test which must be done in Pembroke within eight weeks of your surgery date.
X-rays will be done at the Pembroke Regional Hospital between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday to Friday.
You should stop the use of Vitamin E or herbal medications one week prior to surgery.
Have a shower or bath and wash your hair before coming for surgery.
Do not wear makeup, nail polish, perfume, cologne or other scented products. You may wear a non-scented deodorant.
Do not wear jewelry or contact lenses. Do not use metal hair clips. Acrylic nails have to be removed.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing to return home in. You will need to arrange to have someone pick you up to go home.
Bring your own toiletries: Kleenex, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush, comb, shaving equipment, slippers and containers for dentures, contact lenses and hearing aids.
All jewellery and body piercings must be removed, including:
- rings - necklaces - plastic retainers
- toe rings - barbells - labrets
- earrings - watches - captive bead rings
- chains - spacers - religious/sacred metal
- wedding bands - bangles - body jewellery
- Burns from equipment
- Swelling of fingers and toes (especially if surgery involves arms or legs)
- Choking or other injuries involving the mouth
- Wound infection from piercing site
- Tearing or injuring the area near the jewellery
- Loss of jewellery or precious stones
- Risk of injury to hospital staff
Your jewellery must come off before you come to the hospital. For assistance, please go to a jeweler as this can prevent unnecessary damage. You can go to a body piercing salon to help you remove your piercings.
Please let the nurse know that you may have an infection near your body jewellery.
Except for jewellery located in the operative area, you can put your jewellery and body piercings back on after you return home or when you are on the hospital unit.
A family member may be able to help you put your jewellery back on. A body piercing salon can put body piercings back in.
Leave your credit cards and money at home. We do not assume responsibility for lost or stolen articles.
The use of cell phones is permitted in designated areas.
if you use a CPAP at home, please bring it to the hospital.
Preparation: Do not eat solid food after midnight; this includes gum or candy. Clear fluids such as water, apple juice, Gatorade or ginger ale may be taken in small amounts until 6 a.m.
Medications may be taken with sips of water after that time. You may brush your teeth.
Please note that eating or drinking can cause you to vomit during anaesthesia and this can be dangerous. Your surgery may be cancelled if these specific instructions are not followed.
Please report to the Admitting and Patient Registration office, located in Tower A, Ground Floor, Room 2. Please bring your Health Card.
The Registration office is located adjacent to the Emergency Department.
This is NOT the Registration office.
There is no need to see the nurse.
DO NOT fill out the green slip in front of this office.
This IS the Registration office.
It is labelled "Registration 2".
You will see signs that say surgical registration.
After registering, take the elevator to the 3rd Floor, Tower A - Surgical Unit. Go to the end of the hall to the left of the elevators. You will see Day Surgery on the right hand side of the hall.
Please ensure that you leave the phone number of a contact person that we can reach if necessary.
One to two people may accompany the patient to the hospital, but they will be asked to wait in the cafeteria (The Lunch Box) or in the Mural Café.
A maximum of two visitors per patient will be allowed during visiting hours. (Applies to Same Day Admission)
Public visiting hours are 11:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Seven days a week.
The anaesthetist will speak to you in a waiting area prior to surgery.
It is not unusual to experience a sore throat for a day or two after surgery.
After your surgery, you will remain in day surgery for a period of time.
Visits from clergy are available while in hospital at your request.
Do not drive for 24 hours after your surgery. You must make arrangements to have someone drive you home from the Pembroke Regional Hospital. Your surgery may be cancelled if you have not arranged transportation.
On occasion, it is necessary to delay or cancel elective surgeries due to unforeseen circumstances or emergencies. We regret this inconvenience.
Occasionally you may start on a stretcher even for the first night. (Applies to Same Day Admission)
Please notify your surgeon before surgery if you develop a cold or any other illness or decide to cancel your surgery.
